Yesterday was supposed to begin around 6am in the field picking sweet corn, but Michael finally decided to take me to Pirates, so we had to sleep in a bit. Then, since we had gone to Pirates, I had to stay home and bake my cakes while they went to pick the corn. Believe you me, I shed a few tears over that!! They got quite a load, and the kids hung in there shucking it and hauling out all the shucks. They put up 48 pints, plus sealing a few in the FoodSaver still on the cob. We don't know if this will work, but we saw it on the DVD that came with it, so we're going to give it a go. I had to go to work at the bakery before they were done, so I missed all the scrubbing, cutting and bagging. Then I got home and still had to decorate the cakes, but they were rather unimpressive, so I decided to post a picture of my impressive family instead. The kids kept coming in to see if they were on my blog yet, but I just didn't think it would be too nice to be in here blogging while they were in the 107 degree heat shucking corn.
I work with a young gal named Malarie at the bakery. She graduated a year ago and is trying to figure out where to go and what to do. Her friends aren't all that impressive, but they are a definite step up from her high school friends. She has a lot of talent decorating cakes but wants something more. She's always talked about opening a bakery, and I'd love to do that with her, but I've been young before and know not to really hang your hat on the dreams you're not going to aggressively pursue. Anyway, we both know she needs to move on from the bakery and that is upsetting to me. She's the best part about working there. But yesterday she started talking about Cosmetology school. I'm really hoping she'll do that. She's not afraid to live in a big city, but she will be taking a girlfriend with her, so that will be even better. Just knowing how talented she is with cakes makes me very excited to see what she can do with hair. But still, I hope she stays for a while!
