Thank God I'm a Country Girl

So how many of you lucky folks have such a view in your backyard?? Well, technically, it's not my backyard, but isn't it loverly??

My goal was to get educated, marry well, and get out of this life. So what did I do? Got educated, married well, and brought him home. Boy, what a mistake. I really hope I can recover his better points if we ever get a home of our own. Honestly, I was looking forward to landscaping and flowers... endless perinneals littering a beautiful lawn. Well, the Big Red Dog has shattered most of those dreams, and now Michael is really enjoying the deer we butcher during winter. Let's just hope the butchering continues at Mom's house. At least she's used to the view!

Narnia Fiasco

A church Narnia Party... what a great idea!! I hadn't read the books since I was a kid. I was so excited. This was planned on only a week's notice, but we decided that if we were going to do it, we were going to do it well. A 4:00 movie and a 6:30 discussion afterwards at the church. We also decided that since it's over the dinner hour, we'd have to serve dinner or this just wouldn't work. A potato bar seemed the easiest, so Michael and I volunteered to bake off the potatoes and bring them in before the movie. We also made some Turkish Delight, which we'd never actually seen or tasted before. We made the Turkish Delight a few days ago, and as we were doing it, we noticed the recipe wasn't really written all that well. It calls for sliced up orange and lemon peel, but later you strain it out. Well, that seemed odd for Michael, so he zested an orange, lemon and lime and then chopped the zest super fine. Ok, no problem. Later, as we're measuring and adding all these ingredients, Michael noticed that you never really add the other half of the water. It says to use a cup and a quarter of water. Use half of it to bring the mixture to a boil, but the other half never actually appears anywhere. Strange. Well, I was expecting this to be a hard candy, but as we're progressing through this, it seemed more like Knox Blox. So I told him where I'd add the cold water in Knox Blox, and he agreed this made sense. Chefboy had never made Knox Blox. I, however, had made them frequently as a kid, since my culinary skills ended somewhere in the Betty Crocker Junior Cookbook. The queen of amazing feats in the kitchen that don't really amount to "cooking."
Anyway, Sunday rolls around and we have the kids all hyped up. Michael's feeling a bit sick, but trudges on because we've promised all these potatoes, and because Matthew actually asked for prayer for him during the church service. Yes, Matthew. So I scrubbed all 95 potatoes, costing me a thumb, and race them in to Michael, who's doctoring them up and getting them in the oven. It took every spare minute we had just getting them washed and done after church and before this movie. Somewhere in the middle, I decided we really needed whipped butter. Fabulous! So as soon as things were under control, I yank out the 80 pound KitchenAid and 3 pounds of butter and start whipping away. Well, not really, because the butter was still too cold. I stuck it in the microwave to soften it when Chefboy pokes his nose in there and tells me to use the paddle. No big deal to him, he finds it a challenge to dirty every pan and utensil we own for each meal he makes. I had already used the whip and knew the microwave would work just fine, so there was no way I was going to dirty anything else. I turned around to mock him in the air a bit and found that he was still watching. I quickly turned around and got the paddle. So we had the butter, we had the Turkish Delight, and he was tossing potatoes in the roaster as Mom and I were finding everyone's shoes and coats. We throw everything in the car a tear off toward church. We spun into the parking lot like Mr Incredible in his big RV, and I hollered to Mallory to see how they were doing. "Super-Duper, Dad!!" Matthew yells, "Do it again!!" Their favorite lines.
So we finally make it to the theatre. Not too bad, only about 10 till. We see everyone from church there and we're really getting excited. The line moved along okay and we're weren't all that nervous until the usher comes out and says that it's packed. What looked like about half the church was still in the lobby and was turned away. I guess about the only thing we forgot to do was reserve a block of tickets.
So, not to disappoint the kids for the rest of their lives, we went to the Movie Gallery to take something home. After nearly an hour, we settled on something they picked, The Hobbit, and something for after the kids went to bed. We put theirs in while we came up with our own potato bar using the 11 potatoes that burned too much to take with us to the party. It turned out to be quite a feast. The kids put their movie back on while we cleaned up and got ready for The Hobbit. I was so excited. I hadn't seen this since I was a kid. Well, as the day dealt its final blow, I wasn't sure I could really handle any more. This wasn't The Hobbit so much as a bunch of Brits sitting around talking about The Hobbit. Grrrrr. We still had some movies from last week, so we put in Sky High, since we'd all seen the Fantastic Four about twelve times. Or, the Amazing Four to Morgan, who just can't seem to say Fantastic. Well, that was cute, we got the kids to bed and watched ours, which was a lot better than I expected. Ours had Jamie Foxx, so I almost went to bed without watching it, knowing what a constant foulmouth he is. Well, little did I know he gets killed halfway through the movie, so it wasn't too bad at all.
Well, so much for my weekend. I guess I better get started on today and see what's in store for me next!

Christmas Break

Well, I think I got all the shopping done, but haven't even started the Christmas letters. Mallory helped me wrap a bunch of presents yesterday, but that didn't get any of hers done. She's pretty hard to sneak around. She really has her nose everywhere, but it's really in a helpful attitude. I rented a couple movies last night, so I may have some time to myself today.
We went to Sam's just to pick up some pictures and leave some film, but also dropped in on the snack bar for lunch. The poor lady made the mistake of asking Mallory why she wasn't in school and got the whole story! She and Mallory had quite the conversation and I was really impressed with her answers. The lady seemed genuinely interested and told her that she was really lucky to be homeschooled. I also learned that this digital camera sure makes pictures from Sam's fast! I thought I'd be uploading them from home like I've been doing with the old one, but I took the SD cards with me just in case. Sure enough, insert in slot, choose pictures, print. Unbelievable. Mom left her film at the one-hour lab and just had the film developed and a CD made, then we stuck that in the machine and same thing!! Amazing. I'm not very impressed with the distance of the flash, so I'll probably still want my 35mm from time to time. But now I know what to do!
So, when we were leaving for Sam's and getting all the kids ready, Dad said he wanted Matthew so they could do wood. I was a little concerned about Matthew being in charge of a 59 year old all day, but I do know how fantastic Matthew is at unloading wood for the stove, so I said he could stay. Then Morgan wanted to stay, too, which I was really sure was a mistake, but they insisted they could handle him. I loaded up some movies and told them they could send him to the computer, too. Dad said later that after tossing a couple logs, he said his muscles were only "this big" (little pinch in the air) and couldn't do anymore. Dad got him down off the log pile and he ran over and started pitching snowballs at them. Poor guy. I know what it's like to be so exhausted.
Well, the kids are rising and we need to get some presents to the post office. I want to get some outdoor pictures of the kids this afternoon and see if I can't figure out how to post some!! We also have our last AWANA night before break, too. I just love my Cubbies!!!
Hmmm, looks like there's a lot of cleaning up left from Michael's catering job last night! My day has begun!!

Christmas Program

So if there's anything that makes a Mom's hands sweat, it's seeing her children on stage, knowing she's invited all the family, and wondering what her pride and joy might do. I got off relatively well this year. Mallory was pretty sick, but read her scripture and sang her duet with very little trouble and a whole lot of poise. What a trooper. I thought Matthew's teachers knew that he was uneasy having lines and would rather do something that did not involve holding or speaking into a microphone. They did not, and after rehearsal yesterday, I got the "what-for" that Matthew didn't have his lines ready. Ready to fire back, I simply stated that Matthew's lines had been reassigned. Great restraint for me. Continuing her obvious rampage she decided that she must have given them to my completely unorganized husband. (Which he's not by any stretch of the imagination.) I remained cool and reminded her that my husband and I both agreed that Matthew would rather not have lines and that we didn't see any reason to make him speak in front of crowds when there were plenty of kids who would love to have the extra lines. This was going nowhere and she left me with what Matthew needed to memorize. Matthew's one of those kids who you just have no idea what to expect. If he's in that bashful mood, I was afraid he just might throw up. If he's in that ornery mood, he could really run with something just to see what he could actually get away with doing. As it turned out, he said his lines, stayed in line, and just plain did a fabulous job. Had a cute little crown and turned out to be a wise man and not the wise guy I was fearing. Morgan, on the other hand, well, if you know anything about my brother, you really know Morgan. He's usually pretty quiet, but that leads to being quite sneaky. He did pretty well... he and his friend Jacob (who happens to be the son of one of my best friends from high school... another thing I fear!) were pretty calm, but had me scared the whole time. They just looked ready to do something I'd regret. All went well for both services and the parents are quite proud. My knuckles should regain their color yet today.

Just another day

Well, just some ramblings to start this off...
This morning I find myself prolonging (procrastinating) getting into the shower for yet another long and crazy day. The kids have practice for the Sunday School program this morning and all of them are sick, but Mom drags them in anyway. I have a crop this afternoon, which I extended to the morning, too, since I have to be there anyway. There's also a cookie exchange tonight, but I have no idea when I think I'd make a batch of cookies. Mom wants me to go to a party Monday night that involves that game where you swipe each other's gifts and play a really silly "me-first" kind of attitude that I don't allow in my kids, but I certainly want it to be the focus at Christmas. Especially since KGBI doesn't even know what Christmas is anymore, although they are one of the few businesses that still call it "Christmas" and not just "The Holidays." So that's where my life is now, but that's just the first 10 minutes of today... things should get better...
